What is a Network Interface Card?

Hello Guys, Welcome to our blog, Today I’m going to share some Information about NIC which is known as Network Interface Card, In the world of Computer and Technologies most of the peoples are aware from NIC, Network Interface Card is a very important part of computer That’s why I’m going to share this article.

What is a Network Interface Card?

A network interface card or commonly know as a NIC is a hardware device which is installed into the computer without this hardware component the computer will not be able to connect to any network. This Network Interface Card is installed into the circuit board of the computer which allows the computer to detect the network and then connect to it.

What is a Network Interface Card

The network interface card is known in many different names like an interface controller, LAN adapter, and network adapter. This allows the computer to connect to both the wire as well as the wireless communications. This device allows the computer to communicate with each other through the LAN in the local area as well in long-distance through the Internet protocol. The network interface card consists of two-layer namely the physical layer and the data layer, it consists of the hardware circuit required for the physical layer and for the data layer to also run. In the early versions of NIC, it was been connected through the USB or wired to the computer, but now the modern computer comes with an inbuilt NIC chip.

Types of Network Interface Card (NIC)

Internal Network Card

An internal network card is a hardware component which has a specific slot in the motherboard. This card only works when is connected to network cables and then provides a network. These networks give access to the computer when it connects with a wired network. There are two types of INC which is peripheral components Interconnect and the industry Architecture.

External Network Card

An external network card is used when the computer doesn’t have an internal network card installed in its motherboard. This card doesn’t require the network wire to connect to the network it just needs to be installed in the USB or can also be wireless. There are two types which are wireless and USB types. The wireless card doesn’t require a network cable but needs to be installed in the motherboard but the USB one needs to install in the USB port which then allows the computer to connect to the network via the USB.

Components of an Network Interface Card

Speed

The NIC has a speed rating which is denoted by the Mbps which suggests the speed of the card when the card is connected to the computer network with an ample bandwidth. When the bandwidth is lower than the NIC the speed is low or the network is been connected to various computers then the speed slows down.

Driver

A driver is basically software which is installed into the computer which allows the computer operating system to pass the data to the NIC. This software is to be downloaded into the computer when the NIC is installed. The driver must be upward regularly and should be uncorrupted so that NIC should perform smoothly.

Connected led

The NIC nowadays have led LED indicator which is installed or fixed to the device which allows the user to know when the computer is been connected to the network and the data is been transmitted by the LED been light up. These led are connected to the USB NIC which is put into the USB slot of the computer which then indicates the connection.

Router

The router is a device which allows the computer to connect to the internet. A router allows the computer to communicate with other computers and other devices. The computer needs to be first connected to the router’s signal and then the router allows the computer to connect to the internet.

Conclusion

A network interface is a device which is sometimes installed into the computer or needs to installed externally. This allows the computer to connect to the network by which the computer can access the internet. These devices are installed onto the motherboard of the computer and help the user to have a smooth operating of the network interface.
